St. Louis Argus 1915-1926

St. Louis Argus Newspaper (1915-1926)
This collection contains digitized and enhanced issues of the St. Louis Argus scanned from micro-film for the years 1915-1926. The St. Louis Argus, while not technically the 'first' black newspaper in St. Louis, became the most recognizable name in the black journalism locally for much of the 20th century.

For a few articles on the Argus please see the following link to the St. Louis Media History foundation: http://www.stlmediahistory.com/index.php/Print/PrintPublicationHistory/st.-louis-argus

This collection contains about 10 years of Argus print, topics of interest range from the East St. Louis Race Riots to the Pine Street YMCA fundraising drive, negro league baseball and beyond.

On my blog I highlighted in two posts editorials and articles relating to the 1915-1916 fight to oppose the passage of a segregation ordinance. You can find that here:

This work was done by Mark Loehrer, St. Louis Historian, while working on his undergraduate in History from the University of Missouri St Louis.
This project was blessed by the University of Missouri St. Louis, State Historical Society Research Center.
